The New York Times- “Conspiracy Theories about Zika Spread through Brazil with the Virus” 2/16/2016
The above article discusses the rumors that communities in Brazil and other countries in Latin America are hearing about with the new spread of the Zika Virus. Some of those Ridiculous theories are stating that the mosquitos are a master plan of the government and were genetically modified and created by the government. Others are saying that it’s a government’s plan to than make a drug that they will own the patent to and they can make money of it.
The U.S Government head the Defense Department Disease-carrying insects, came out and stated that these theories are “ridiculous” and Not-credible” people in Brazil and other Latin American countries are still fearing these theories.
I think this article outlines the international dilemma of most corrupt and un-trustworthy government’s that people have to deal with. Brazil is known to have a very corrupt government as well as most countries in Latin America, these governments a lot of times are where the politicians get rich and the citizens get poorer. Government’s where the citizens are most likely to believe conspiracy theories than their own government.
Even when the U.S steps in to try and calm the situation down and show that those are absurd theories and that they in some sense should trust their governments, even than the citizens are so disappointed with their government’s that they don’t really know who to believe. So than we should ask ourselves, how can we in the international arena help citizens of such corrupt governments to not fear their own government’s when their own governments are so corrupt that they don’t care to help their people.
